Rigid Gems
Utilizing Ray Tracing Technology to Render Realistic Gemstones
FerioWorks (aka the Fukurono brothers) is the sole proprietor of Rigid Gems, interactive software that can simulate the physics of light refraction and reflections so realistically that you wouldn't be able to discern the difference between a Rigid Gems graphic and a photo of the object in real life. By utilizing ray tracing technology, we make computer-generated images more lifelike than ever.
The Fukurono brothers were inspired by Stephane Guy and Cyril Soler's 2004 paper published in SIGGRAPH on the use of algorithms to digitally recreate gemstones in real-time, and Arvo and Kirk's 1987 paper on the use of ray tracing to reproduce objects and environments, so much so that they devoted their late teens to developing Rigid Gems from scratch. They completed their first demonstration in 2009 and have been improving Rigid Gems' technology ever since. See a comparison of the old and new versions below.
