Optimizing Solutions

Other than working on Rigid Gems and other FerioWorks projects, Toshi and Yoshi Fukurono help with projects for other companies. A recent project Yoshi worked on was for the construction industry where he was asked to make point cloud software that would accurately recreate buildings and bridges as 3D graphics and could be used to help with planning.

One of the issues the client’s engineers faced was that they had to manually reproduce more complex aspects of the landscape design because the data was too heavy and couldn’t be automatically recognized. Another issue the team faced was that the system only worked for 3ds Max—and they were only familiar with Maya—but it was clear that the hundreds of millions of point cloud data would not work on Maya.

From his experience optimizing data to make Rigid Gems work in real time, Yoshi used Draco to compress over 10GB of point cloud data to just 800MB, enabling the data to be encoded in just 150 seconds and decoded in around 75 seconds. The designers and engineers of the construction company now happily use their system with Maya since Yoshi not only found a way to optimize the data, but also ended up making a Maya plugin for the system.

FerioWorks isn’t just about Rigid Gems and ray tracing!
