In Japan, the PlayStation 2 came out in 2000, and the Fukurono brothers were debating whether or not to buy one since they were so popular and hard to come by, just like the PS5 currently. In 2001, Sony announced that they would release 2,000 Linux for PS2 kits, and the brothers had managed to buy one immediately after it was released without any problems. After they got their hands on one, they saw on the news that all the kits had sold out within the first eight minutes of their release and that there was a waiting list of 3,500 people, who were waiting not for new kits, but for cancellations. Being able to get such a rare developer kit was one of the factors that motivated them to start programming and seriously study engineering, as well as kickstarted the development of Rigid Gems.
